Heritage Ottawa – Uncovering Bytown

To mark Ottawa’s bicentennial, we are offering a special tour on July 5th that focuses on Bytown in the 1820s. The tour will be presented in French at 10 am and repeated in English at 2 pm.

Why was the Rideau Canal built 200 years ago? What was life like in Bytown back then? Join historian and educator Dominique Lajoie who will retrace the history of the region’s first peoples, the construction of the canal, and the founding of the city up to 1855, when it took the name Ottawa. Through surprising anecdotes, you’ll gain a general understanding of the history of Ottawa’s founding.
