The recent storm and severe heat event have been powerful reminders that communities across Ottawa are experiencing more frequent extreme weather events.
As Westboro continues to recover, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue building a resilient, healthy and connected neighbourhood.
Trees and green spaces do much more than make our community beautiful. They provide shade during heat waves, help cool our streets, absorb rainfall, improve air quality, provide habitat for wildlife, and contribute to our health and well-being. While no single solution can prevent flooding during extreme weather, a healthy urban tree canopy and green infrastructure are important elements of a resilient community.
The storm also highlighted the importance of continuing to invest in resilient public infrastructure. Like many established neighbourhoods across Ottawa, Westboro includes infrastructure built over many decades and under different design standards. As weather patterns evolve and our community grows, thoughtful investment in roads, stormwater infrastructure, parks, trees and public spaces will help ensure Westboro remains safe, resilient and sustainable for future generations.
When the next heat warning comes, remember to stay hydrated, take breaks from the heat, monitor weather alerts, and check in on neighbours, especially older adults and others who may need extra support.
