Seniors Safety Meeting Recap

By Cristin Napier, Transportation, Traffic & Safety Committee Lead
On November 14, seniors and community members gathered to discuss road, transit, and personal safety in Westboro. Here are the key takeaways:

Road Safety

  •  Safer Roads Ottawa emphasized protecting vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists).
  •  Be Safe, Be Seen: Wear reflective clothing or lights.
  •  Pedestrian Tips: Press pedestrian buttons fully and hold for audible signals. Advocate for safer infrastructure like early pedestrian starts at intersections.
  •  Cyclist Education: Encourage safe cycling practices; consider walking bikes on busy sidewalks.

Transit Safety

  •  Emergency Call Buttons/Boxes are on buses and trains—use them if needed.
  •  Safety Tips: Ask to sit before transit moves; buses stop at designated areas, especially after 9 PM.
  •  For emergencies, call 613-741-2478 or 911.

 Concerns raised: overcrowded buses, heat at bus stops, accessibility issues.

Personal Safety

  •  Julie Lalonde shared practical strategies to stay safe and support others with the 5D’s: Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, Direct.
  •  Training sessions: Nov 25 at 1:30 PM and Dec 6 (1 hour). Details: Julie Lalonde.
  •  Education empowers seniors and bystanders to respond safely to harassment or threats.

Community Action & Resources

  • Report issues or ask questions: 211 or Safer Roads Ottawa
  • Advocate for safer streets, transit, and social supports – “If not us, who?”

Seniors play a vital role in keeping Westboro safe. Staying informed, visible, and proactive
makes a real difference. Thank you for making a difference in our community.
